For the love of the woods

imageBoth of us have always loved being in woodlands; from the amazing trees in Richmond and Bushy Parks in Surrey, where we grew up, to the incredble, dense forests of Northern Germany where our dog, Branston, originally comes from. It was natural, therefore, that we’d choose to build our smallholding around a small coppice in Myddfai, just above Llandovery.

making charcoal has always fascinated me and after Dinah sent me to learn the basics from The Bullworthy Project, I had the bug. It’s such a versatile product and so much better for the environment than I’d ever realised. And it’s not just for barbecues (thankfully, as they’re not a great popular feature of life in The Brecon Beacons); from room fresheners to digestion aids, from ancient remidies to environment-loving fertilisers, charcoal is a hidden hero.

As I learn more about the positive impact this traditional product is having in so many diverse markets, I’ll be sharing my findings here on the blog. Along with plenty of pictures of Branston, who is key to the success of the operation.

cheers for now,

john
