North Lodge, in the hamlet of Myddfai in Carmarthenshire, has been home to us since December 2014. It is the culmination of many years of planning, dreaming, hoping and debating; John and I have always wanted a smallholding which would provide our home and our income. Some days we have to pinch ourselves to confirm we’re really living it!
welcome to our little piece of Welsh wonderland; North Lodge sits in two acres on the hillside, leading into Llwynwormwood and the Brecon Beacons National Park. We’ve got a large vegetable garden, a small coppice of mainly hazel and birch, a field we’ve planted with willow and a small mobile home/cabin where John’s mum lives.
John is a Charcoal and BioChar maker; we use the wood we coppice from our own small mixed broad-leaf coppice and also from local farmers. John is lucky to be invited by several of them to clear fallen trees, which means we can make our charcoal without cutting anything down. Coppicing wood is a brilliant, ancient practice, which actually extends the lives of the trees. Learning about this is just one of the new areas we’re enjoying about life here.
we know we’re lucky. We’re grateful to be here every day. We’d love to share some of the produce and items we make and grow here, so take a look through our pages to find out what we’re creating at the moment.
our Blog will be regularly updated with tales of North Lodge, the animals who share it with us and the joys of living a new, greener and slower-paced life.
we hope you come to visit us soon
